BASEBALL TIGERS FALL SHORT AGAINST METHODIST, 4-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 3, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team held an early 2-0 advantage through three innings, but the Monarchs answered with four runs over the final six innings to capture the 4-2 win on Thursday afternoon at Yank Bernier Field.  Trailing 2-0, Methodist tied the game with single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game and scored two runs in the top of the ninth to secure the 4-2 win.  With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 13-19 on the season, while the Monarchs improve to 20-9-1 overall.

The Tigers took an early lead as Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) and Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) scored to give Hampden-Sydney a 2-0 advantage after one inning of play.  Methodist would tie the game at 2-2 as the Monarchs scored single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth inning.  After both teams failed to produce any runs over the next three and a half innings, Methodist scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take the 4-2 victory.

Sophomore starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the no decision for the Tigers as he gave up two runs, none earned, on two hits and one walk in five innings of work.  Senior Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss, working four innings, allowing two runs on four his and one walk.  Elliott Bisplinghoff earned the victory for Methodist, working eight innings, allowing two runs on six hits and no walks while striking out six.

Harrell and Toledano led the Tigers at the plate as each went 2-for-4 from the plate with one run scored.  Sophomore Ryan Daniel (Yanceyville, NC/Yancey Bartlett) and junior Luke Swiney (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) went 1-for-4 for the Tigers on the afternoon as well.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, April 5 as the Tigers will travel to Ferrum, VA to face Ferrum College in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
