BASEBALL TIGERS DROP ODAC CONTEST TO LYNCHBURG, 8-3 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 9, 2008)—Lynchburg College took an early 5-0 lead over Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday afternoon and went on for the 8-3 victory over the Tigers in ODAC baseball action at Yank Bernier Field. The Tigers managed only six hits on the afternoon and committed three errors in the loss. Hampden-Sydney sophomore Nick Price (Sterling, VA/Potomac Falls) led the Tigers at the plate as he went 2-for-3 with a double and one run scored. With the loss, the Tigers drop to 15-20 on the season and 6-7 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, while the Hornets improve to 22-7 overall and 11-1 in the conference. The Hornets took an early lead as Lynchburg scored two runs in the top of the first and three runs in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead. In the bottom of the third inning, Hampden-Sydney answered with two runs of their own as sophomore Nick Price and freshman A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) scored to cut the lead to three runs, 5-2. Lynchburg scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tigers answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the eighth to stay within three runs. Leading 6-3, Lynchburg scored two runs in the top of the ninth and held the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the ninth to go on for the 8-3 win. Senior starter Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for the Tigers, working two and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks. Joe Devlin earned the victory for Lynchburg, working five innings, allowing two runs on three hits and one walk. Price led the Tigers at the plate as each went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Junior Evan Rogers (Chester, VA/L.C. Bird) went 1-for-1 in his lone appearance at the plate for Hampden-Sydney, while senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis) was 1-for-3. Lynchburg sophomore Jeff Taylor led the Hornets as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBI, while Matthew Winston was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run. Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Saturday, April 12 as the Tigers will travel to Harrisonburg, VA to face Eastern Mennonite University in an ODAC doubleheader.
