BASEBALL TIGERS FALL IN 11-10 THRILLER TO WASHINGTON AND LEE

Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 16, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney baseball team held an 8-1 advantage over Washington and Lee through six innings, but the Generals outscored the Tigers 10-2 over the final three innings to take the 11-10 come-from-behind victory.  Both teams were swinging the bat well as the Generals had 15 hits and the Tigers had 14 hits, but the Tigers committed five errors in the losing effort.  With the loss, the Tigers drop to 16-22 on the season and 7-9 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play, while the Generals improve to 19-9 overall and 9-7 in the conference.

The Tigers took a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run homer from junior Hall Toledano(Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) over the left field wall.  Washington and Lee scored a single run in the top of the fifth inning, but the Tigers answered as senior Daniel Prieto (Wellington, FL/Cardinal Newman) drove in two of the three Tiger runs to push the H-SC lead to seven runs, 8-1.  Trailing 8-1 after six complete innings, the Generals scored three runs in the top of the seventh, four runs in the top of the eighth, and three runs in the top of the ninth to take an 11-9 lead.  In the bottom of the ninth inning, sophomore pinch hitter Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) hit a sacrifice fly to score senior David Toney (Mechanicsville, VA/Lee-Davis), but that would be all the Tigers would earn as Washington and Lee held on for the 11-10 victory.

Despite allowing no earned runs in action, senior Daniel Hadra (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) took the loss for the Tigers, working one and one-third inning, allowing three runs, none earned, on three hits and no walks.  Justin Pharis earned the victory for Washington and Lee, working fone inning, allowing one run on two hits and one walk.  Jim Plantholt earned the save for the Generals, recording the final three outs of the game.

Freshman Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) led the Tigers at the plate as each went 4-for-5 with three runs scored.  Daniel Prieto went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI and one run scored, while Hall Toledano was 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored.  Sophomore Ben Brawley (Leesburg, VA/Loudoun County) was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Saturday, April 19 as the Tigers will welcome Roanoke College to Yank Bernier Field for an ODAC doubleheader in the regular-season finale for both teams. First pitch for Saturday's game is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
