MARLINS SCORE 5-4 WIN IN EXTRA INNINGS, TIGERS ELIMINATED

LYNCHBURG, VA (April 25, 2008)—After nine innings, Hampden-Sydney and Virginia Wesleyan were tied at 4-4, but a two-out triple by the Marlins' Brian Schweers turned into a run on a throwing error to give Virginia Wesleyan the 5-4 victory in ten innings on the second day of the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament.  The Tigers erased a two-run deficit to tie the game in the top of the eighth inning, but could not manage another run as the Marlins won in extra innings.  With the win, Virginia Wesleyan improves to 25-15-1 on the season and moves on to play Saturday at City Stadium, while Hampden-Sydney wraps up their season at 17-25 overall.

Virginia Wesleyan scored in the bottom of the fifth inning as Adam Marx scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandon Hathaway to take a 1-0 lead, but the Tigers answered with two runs in the top of the sixth as Alnor Rodriguez (Orlando, FL/Hargrave Military Academy) and Todd Harrell (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) scored to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage.  In the bottom of the sixth, Virginia Wesleyan managed three runs to build a two-run lead, 4-2.  In the top of the seventh, Zach Harrelson (Danville, VA/George Washington) scored on a double by A.J. Prill (Midlothian, VA/James River) to cut the Marlin lead to one run, and in the top of the eighth, Harrell scored a double by Hall Toledano (Asheboro, NC/Asheboro) to tie the game, 4-4.  After neither team scored in the ninth inning, Virginia Wesleyan's Brian Schweers tripled with two-outs and advanced home on a throwing error to give the Marlins a 5-4 win.

Starter Robbie Bailey (Richmond, VA/Hermitage) earned the no decision for the Tigers, working five and one-third innings, allowing four runs on three hits and two walks.  Despite allowing no earned runs, sophomore Bryan Breedlove (Suffolk, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk) took the loss for the Tigers after working four and one-third innings.  Chris Deanes earned the victory for Marlins as he worked the final two and two-thirds innings, allowing no runs on no hits and one walk. 

Toledano led the Tigers at the plate as he went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Todd Harrell went    1-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI.  Also producing for the Tigers was A.J. Prill as he went 1-for-2 at the plate with one RBI and two walks.
