Box Score

ASHLAND, VA (January 12, 2005)—Randolph-Macon College started the game on a 23-4 run and never looked back en route to a 67-48 victory over Hampden-Sydney College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball action Wednesday night in Crenshaw Gymnasium.  With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 8-6 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC as the Tigers fall to 6-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play.

With 10:15 remaining in the first half, Randolph-Macon had built a 23-4 lead over the Tigers as Yellow Jacket junior forward Justin Wansley scored eight of his game-high 14 points to pace the R-MC run.  The Tigers battled back with an 11-4 run to trim the lead to 12 on a Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) three pointer with 5:02 left in the first stanza, but the team would draw no closer and trailed 32-17 at the break.

In the second half, Macon pushed its lead to as much as 24 (52-28) on a Stephen Sutherland bucket with 8:53 to play in the game.  The Tigers cut the lead to 16, 63-47, on a Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) three-pointer with 2:19 to play, but free throws by Andrew Baker and Adam Krovic down the stretch made it a 19 point victory for the Yellow Jackets, 67-48.

Wansley led five Yellow Jackets in double figures with 14 points to go with ten rebounds.  Patrick Gill finished with 11 for R-MC, while Philip Hawley led a trio of players with ten points, including Justin Moyer and Andrew Baker, while Hawley’s ten rebounds tied him for the game-high with Wansley.

Mike Edwards paced the Tigers with ten points, while freshman forward Mladen Cvijanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Miller School) added eight points.  The Tigers shot just 28 percent (16-of-57) from the floor and were out-rebounded by the Yellow Jackets, 50-31.  Meanwhile, Randolph-Macon connected on 43 percent (26-61) of its shots from the floor.

Hampden-Sydney will look to get its season turned around Saturday, January 15, as the Tigers host Roanoke College at 2 pm in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium in a game sponsored locally by Superior Mortgage.  The contest will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
