EDWARDS HELPS TIGERS OUTLAST GUILFORD IN OT, 81-78 GREENSBORO, NC (February 9, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney sophomore guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) scored a career-high 23 points and nailed a three pointer with four seconds left in regulation to send the contest into overtime where the Tigers outlasted Guilford, 81-78, Wednesday night in Ragan Brown Fieldhouse. The win is the second overtime victory for the Tigers over the Quakers this season as H-SC improves to 15-8 overall and 10-6 in the ODAC, while Guilford falls to 13-10 overall and 8-8 in conference play. Edwards’ three came as the Tigers were down three points, 71-68, with just four seconds remaining. He caught the ball off the inbounds pass and drilled a 21-foot three pointer just in front of his own bench to send the game into an extra period. In the overtime period, Edwards connected on four free throws as he canned all 12 of his charity stripe attempts in leading the Tigers to the victory. It was a tale of two halves for both teams as the Tigers held as much as a nine point advantage in the first half, 29-20, after a pair of Mladen Cvijanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Miller School) free throws, while Guilford held a nine point advantage in the second half, 61-52, on a layup by junior forward Genaro Lawhorn with 6:28 remaining. The Tigers, who made just 7-of-22 from the floor in the second half, stayed in the game with clutch free throw shooting as the team made 19-of-24 from the stripe in the second stanza, thanks to Cvijanovic and Edwards who were a combined 15-for-15 at one point. Trailing by nine at the 6:28 mark, the Tigers clawed back with a 14-5 run to tie the game at 66 on a pair of Cvijanovic free throws with 1:47 to play. The Quakers went ahead by four, 70-66, on a free throw by Jordan Snipes with 25 seconds remaining, but Edwards drove to the basket and banked in a shot to cut the lead to two, 70-68, with 16 seconds to play. Quaker freshman guard Caleb Kimbrough then made one of two free throws making it 71-68 in favor of Guilford, setting up Edwards’ game-tying three pointer to send it into overtime. Edwards’ 23 points led three Tigers in double figures as Cvijanovic tallied a career-high 18, while freshman guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) tacked on 13. The Tigers shot 43 percent (23-for-54) from the floor, 41 percent (7-for-17) from beyond the arc and made 28-of-39 (72%) from the line. Lawhorn led the Quakers with 17 points, while freshman guard Kerry Atkinson added 15, Jamel Taylor 11 and Ben Strong ten to give Guilford four players in double figures. The Quakers shot 42 percent (26-for-62) from the floor, 25 percent (4-for-16) from three point range and 65 percent (22-for-34) from the line, while out-rebounding the Tigers, 44-37. Hampden-Sydney returns to action Saturday, February 12, as the team hosts arch-rival Randolph-Macon College at 2 pm in Fleet Gymnasium. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
