TIGERS AVOID STING, UPEND EMORY & HENRY, 68-67
EMORY, VA—Hampden-Sydney College survived a flurry of potential game-winning shots by Emory and Henry over the final 15 seconds of action to score a 68-67 victory over its Old Dominion Athletic Conference counterpart Saturday afternoon in E&H’s King Center. With the win, the Tigers improve to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in ODAC play as the Wasps fall to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC. The Tigers, who never trailed in the second half, held as much as an eight point lead on two different occasions only to see Emory and Henry cut into the lead thanks to three-pointers by guard Lance Reasbeck. Over the final 15 seconds of the contest, with Hampden-Sydney holding a one-point lead, Reasbeck attempted a three pointer and a 12-footer but neither fell as the Tigers came away with their first road victory of the 2004-05 season. Hampden-Sydney’s bench out-scored Emory and Henry’s, 40-9, as all 11 Tigers who saw action in the contest scored, while Brian Gunn (Danville, VA/GW Danville) and Mladen Cvijanovic (Belgrade, Serbia/Miller School) were the only players in double figures with 12 and ten points respectively. Three Tigers scored seven points, including sophomore Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School), freshman Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) and sophomore Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale), who scored all seven of his points in the second half. Tiger center Aaron Lewek (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) led all players with nine rebounds as the 6-foot-8 junior recorded his fourth straight contest with at least nine rebounds. Hampden-Sydney, which has not been out-rebounded by an opponent this season, won the battle of the boards as the Tigers pulled down 41 caroms against E&H’s 36. Reasbeck led the Wasps with a game-high 23 points, as he hit all seven of E&H’s three pointers, including five in the second half alone, while Gary Kerns added 21. The Tigers shot 47 percent (27-58) from the floor, canned seven three’s and made 7-of-9 (78%) from the charity stripe, while the Wasps made 36 percent (22-62) of their shots from the floor and hit 16-of-21 (76%) from the free throw line. Hampden-Sydney committed 20 turnovers, while the Wasps had 11. The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, December 8, as the team travels to face Lynchburg College at 7 pm. The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
