ROANOKE SENDS TIGERS TO SECOND STRAIGHT LOSS, 72-63

Game Box Score

SALEM, VA (January 14, 2006)—Roanoke sophomore guard Ben Shrader scored 21 points off the bench to lead the Maroons to a 72-63 victory over 11th-ranked (D3hoops.com) Hampden-Sydney Saturday in Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball action.  The loss is the second in-a-row for the Tigers who fall to 11-2 overall and 5-2 in the ODAC, while Roanoke improves to 9-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Hampden-Sydney shot the ball poorly for the second consecutive game as the Tigers connected on just 32.8 percent (22-of-67) of their shots from the floor and made just 9-of-31 (29%) from beyond the arc.  Shrader meanwhile, led the Roanoke charge as he knocked down three of the Maroons six three pointers and connected on 7-of-10 overall from the floor.

The game was tight at the half as the Maroons closed out the first half on a 6-0 run to erase a five-point Tiger advantage and led, 28-27, in the locker room.  Consecutive free throws by Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) to start the second half briefly gave Hampden-Sydney the lead, 29-28, but it would be the last Tiger advantage of the game.

Roanoke pushed its lead to eight points, 42-34, on back-to-back free throws by senior guard Jared Butler at the 12:40 mark, and ran the lead to as much as 16 points (62-46) on a Ben Shrader three pointer with 1:51 to play.

Hampden-Sydney went into foul mode over the final 90 seconds of action, while Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) hit a pair of threes and Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) connected on a long-distance trifecta to cut into the Maroon advantage.  Shrader then sealed the game with a pair of free throws with 11 seconds to play.

Kaase finished with a team-best 20 points to go with 12 rebounds, while junior guard Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) kept the Tigers alive throughout much of the game as he scored a career-high 17 points, courtesy of five three pointers.  Mike Edwards finished with ten points to give the Tigers three players in double figures.

Shrader (21 points) and sophomore A.J. Dowell (12 points) were the only Maroons in double figures, while sophomore forward Josh LaPorte tallied a game-high 15 rebounds as Roanoke out-rebounded the Tigers, 40-38.

Hampden-Sydney looks to rebound from back-to-back losses with a Sunday matchup at Washington and Lee.  The game tips off in Lexington, VA, at 2 pm and will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO.
