TIGERS LOSE KAASE, FALL AT EASTERN MENNONITE, 80-73

Game Box Score

HARRISONBURG, VA (January 28, 2006)—Hampden-Sydney sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring), the leading scorer in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, left the game with an injury after just four minutes of action, while four different Royals scored in double figures as Eastern Mennonite University downed the Tigers, 80-73, Saturday night.  With the win the Royals improve to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in the ODAC, while the Tigers fall to 13-5 and 7-5 in league play.

Kaase, who entered the game averaging 19.7 points-per-contest, scored just one point and pulled down three rebounds before leaving the game with an ankle injury at the 16:10 mark of the first half and the Tigers trailing, 10-1.  The Royals led by as much as 12 in the first half and 14 overall as Korey Whiting led the way with 15 points and five steals, while Jason Sager added 13 points and 11 boards, Dustin Galyon 13 points and Brad Parkes 12.

Galyon scored all 13 of his points in the first half, helping the Royals open a 12 point advantage, 27-15, with 7:51 to play.  With just over two minutes to play in the half, the Tigers closed the lead to seven points, 32-25, thanks to four points by sophomore Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison), along with a trifecta and two free throws from junior Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe).  However, the Royals closed the half on a 5-2 run to lead, 37-27, in the locker room.

The Tigers scored the first six points of the second half as Aaron Lewek (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) and Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) each scored three points to cut the Royal lead to four, 37-33, but it would be as close as the Tigers could get.  The Royals opened up a 14 point advantage, 53-39, as Brad Parkes capped off a 16-6 EMU run with a put-back with 13:26 to play in the game.

The Tigers rallied, slicing the lead to seven points, 57-50, on a layup by Matt Green with 7:14 remaining, but the Royals again pushed their advantage back to double digits (65-53) on a Jason Lentz jumper just three minutes later.

Matt Green connected on a pair of three’s, while Tyler Murray also landed a three and Kevin Forrester scored on a layup and two free throws down the stretch as the Tigers traded baskets for free throws by Eastern Mennonite down the stretch, but could get no closer as the Royals avenged a 78-66 loss at Hampden-Sydney on January 9.

Green paced the Tigers with 16 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while Murray and sophomore guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) each added 13 and Forrester 11.  Freshman Jyri Laakso (Oulu, Finland/Makelanrinne) added a career-high nine points to go with six rebounds in 19 minutes of action off the bench.

Hampden-Sydney looks to regroup Monday, January 30, as the Tigers host Bridgewater in the first of four straight home games.  Tip off is slated for 7 pm and the game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
