Game Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 30, 2006)—Bridgewater College erased a ten point halftime deficit to come-from-behind and beat Hampden-Sydney, 62-55, in Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball action Monday night in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.  With the win, the Eagles improve to 8-11 overall and 5-8 in the ODAC, while the Tigers fall to 13-6 and 7-6 in conference play.

Bridgewater senior forward Clay Michael and junior guard Josh Maupin each scored ten second half points, with Michael finishing the game with 17 and Maupin 16 as the Eagles erased the Tiger advantage.  Sophomore guard Drew Prehmus scored 13 points and was the only Tiger in double-figures on the night.

Hampden-Sydney led by as much as 14 points (31-17) in the first half as a Prehmus three pointer with 1:59 to play capped a 22-9 Tiger run.  Josh Maupin and Drew Breidenbaugh nailed back-to-back three pointers late in the half to cut the Tiger advantage to seven, 32-25, but another three pointer by Prehmus with just 13 seconds left in the half gave the Tigers a 35-25 lead at the break.

Bridgewater opened the second half with a 12-4 run, thanks to six points from Maupin and a pair of buckets by Michael, and cut the Tiger advantage to two points, 39-37, with 15:00 to play.  A Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe) and a three point play by freshman forward Jyri Laakso (Oulu, Finland/Makelanrinne) helped push the Tiger lead to six, 45-39, at the 12:58 mark.

The Eagles finally tied the contest, 47-47, on a Clay Michael layup at the 9:25 mark and after being fouled, Michael gave BC its first second-half lead with a made free throw.  A three pointer by junior guard Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) and a pair of made free throws by Mike Edwards put the Tigers back out front, 52-50, just three minutes later, but with 3:41 remaining in the game the Eagles took the lead for good as Andrew Cathlin’s layup put BC in control, 54-52.

Josh Maupin scored four points in the final two minutes of action and Clay Michael sealed the game with a pair of free throws as the Tigers made just 1-of-5 from the floor in the game’s waning minutes.

In addition to making just 6-of-23 (26.1%) from the floor in the second half, the Tigers committed 13 of their game high 20 turnovers in the half.  Overall, the Tigers shot just 36 percent (19-of-53) from the floor, 30 percent (6-of-20) from three point range and 79 percent (11-of-14) from the foul line, while out-rebounding the Eagles, 41-34.
