HOT SHOOTING TIGERS BLAZE PAST GUILFORD, 96-57

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 8, 2006)—Every member of the Hampden-Sydney basketball team scored Wednesday night as the Tigers shot 64 percent from the floor, 60 percent from beyond the arc and 80 percent from the free throw line en route to a 96-57 victory over Old Dominion Athletic Conference foe Guilford College.  With the win the Tigers move into sole possession of third place in the ODAC and improve to 16-6 overall and 10-6 in conference play as the Quakers fall to 11-12 overall and 9-7 in the conference. 

In the final home game of the 2005-2006 season for Hampden-Sydney, sophomore guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) led the way as he knocked down all four of his three point attempts and nailed 7-of-9 overall from the floor to score a game-high 19 points.  Meanwhile, junior guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) added 12 and sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) scored ten as the Tigers canned 17-of-25 (68.0%) in the first half as they jumped out to a 46-23 lead by halftime. 

In the second half, the Tigers knocked in 17-of-22 (77.3%) from the foul line and connected on 60 percent (16-of-27) from the floor en route to rolling up 50 points and extending the final advantage to 39.  Sophomore center Jeremy Szuch (Salem, VA/Glenvar) added a career-high eight points in the stanza, while freshman Fitz Robertson (Queens, NY/Kent School) added a career-best four points. 

Sophomore center Ben Strong paced the Quakers effort as he canned 7-of-14 from the floor for 16 points, while Jamel Taylor came off-the-bench to scored 13.   The Quakers connected on just 32 percent (22-of-69) from the floor and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the foul line, but made just 1-of-13 (7.7%) from beyond the arc in the loss.  Guilford did out-rebound Hampden-Sydney, 36-34, thanks to 22 offensive boards compared to seven by the hot-shooting Tigers.   

Tiger seniors Aaron Lewek (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road) and Matt Guill (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) played well in their final home game as Lewek scored six points and pulled down three boards in 23 minutes of action, while Guill had eight points, four assists, no turnovers and two steals in 20 minutes. 

Hampden-Sydney’s basketball team returns to action Saturday as the Tigers travel to Ashland, VA, to take on arch-rival Randolph-Macon College at 3 pm.  The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
