BLISTERING HOT RANDOLPH-MACON DOWNS TIGERS, 91-75

Game Box Score

ASHLAND, VA (February 11, 2006)—Randolph-Macon’s basketball team shot a blistering 67.3 percent from the floor en route to a 91-75 victory over Hampden-Sydney College in Old Dominion Athletic Conference basketball action Saturday.  With the win the Yellow Jackets improve to 19-5 overall and 14-3 in the ODAC, while the Tigers drop to 16-7 overall and 10-7 in conference play.

Six different Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures as they canned 35-of-52 from the floor, bettering their first half performance (18-of-28/64.3%) with a nearly lights-out performance, 17-of-24 for 71%, in the second half.  Justin Wansley, Stephen Sutherland and Phil Hawley each scored 15 for the Jackets, while David Carlson and Alex Irmer added 14 and Adam Krovic ten.

The Tigers were paced by Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan) with a game-high 16 points, thanks to a 4-for-7 effort from beyond the arc, while Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) scored 15 and junior guard Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) 12 as Green nailed 4-of-5 from three-point range.  The Tigers shot well, knocking down 46 percent of their shots from the floor, along with making 10-of-17 (59%) from beyond the arc, but had no defensive answer for the Yellow Jackets.

The Tigers started the game on the right foot, as free throws by sophomore Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) at the 11:55 mark gave the team their biggest advantage of the game, 15-10.  However, the Yellow Jackets answered with a 15-2 run over the next three-plus minutes as Sutherland, Carlson and Krovic all nailed three-pointers to lead the charge.

A Matt Green trifecta with 7:18 to play in the half cut the Yellow Jacket lead to four, 26-22, but by the 1:12 mark of the half it had swelled to 15 points (45-30) as Sutherland landed two more three’s, while Carlson added seven points, including his second three of the half that capped the 19-7 run.  Hampden-Sydney used a 7-0 run over the final 35 seconds to close the gap to eight before halftime as Drew Prehmus and Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) each nailed drop-back three pointers, while sophomore Jeremy Szuch connected on the front end of a free throw.

Back-to-back three’s by Green and Prehmus to start the second half helped the Tigers cut the Macon lead to four, 49-45, but again Randolph-Macon answered as the hot-shooting continued with Phil Hawley leading the way with seven points, while Justin Wansley added five and Alex Irmer six as the Jackets pushed their lead to 18 (74-56) with 7:15 to play.

The Tigers did not fold however as the team reverted to a full court press, creating three straight steal opportunities that Hampden-Sydney turned into points, while Green, Prehmus and Edwards got into the three-point act and cut the margin to seven points, 76-69, with five minutes to play.

Randolph-Macon proved too difficult to stop down the stretch, while Wansley, Sutherland and Carlson combined to connect on eight-of-eight from the foul line over the final 1:36 to put the game away in favor of the Yellow Jackets for the fifth straight time over the Tigers.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday, February 14, as the squad travels to Lynchburg, VA, to play the Lynchburg College Hornets at 7 pm in the final regular season game of the 2005-06 season.  The contest will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
