Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (December 7, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College sophomore guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) scored a season-high 27 points to lead the 24th-ranked (D3hoops.com) Tigers to a 74-64 win over Old Dominion Athletic Conference-foe Lynchburg College Wednesday night in Fleet Gymnasium.  The win moves the Tigers to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in the ODAC, while the Hornets fall to 0-9 and 0-3 in conference play.

Prehmus connected on 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and canned 6-of-7 from the foul line en route to scoring 27 points, one shy of his career-high.  Sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) added 13 and junior guard Kevin Forrester (Wytheville, VA/George Wythe) scored ten to give the Tigers three in double-figures.

Peter Vasiliou scored 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor to lead the Hornets while Jack Burgess added 11. Both teams connected on 23-of-51 (45.1%) from the floor, while the Tigers dropped in 8-of-19 (42.1%) from three point range compared to a 2-for-14 (14.3%) effort for the Hornets.

“Every victory in the ODAC is an important victory,” said Tiger head coach Bubba Smith. “We have to give credit to Lynchburg for coming at us; they really made us work hard.  Fortunately we made some shots in the second half and Drew (Prehmus) was hot; it’s always nice to get a win when you don’t play your best.”

Free throws by Matt Guill (Emmaus, PA/Emmaus) at the 7:28 mark of the first half gave the Tigers their biggest lead of the stanza, 19-12.  However, Lynchburg battled back to cut the Tiger lead to one point, 29-28, on an Andy Albright jumper with under 43 seconds to play.

The Tigers built a three point halftime advantage into a 13-point lead (62-49) on a Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) three pointer at the 4:52 mark of the second half, but Lynchburg was able to cut their disadvantage to eight points, 72-64, on an Evan Fancourt jumper.  Free throws by Green with four seconds to play gave the Tigers the ten point margin at the buzzer.

Overall, both teams recorded 29 rebounds, while Lynchburg finished with 15 turnovers and eight steals and the Tigers wrapped up the game with 13 turnovers and seven steals.

Hampden-Sydney returns to action Tuesday, December 13, as the Tigers host North Carolina Wesleyan College at 7 pm in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.  The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
