HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (December 29, 2005)—Hampden-Sydney College sophomore guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) scored all 19 of his game-high points in the second half to lead the 19th-ranked (D3hoops.com) Tigers to a 77-62 victory over State University of New York (SUNY) Old Westbury Thursday in the opening game of the 2005 Car Coop/Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament.  In the late afternoon game, Wheaton College (Mass.) improved to 8-1 overall on the year with a 67-60 victory over Neumann (Pa.) College. 

Prehmus’ 19 points came in part thanks to five three pointers as he canned 5-of-9 from beyond the arc for the game, while pulling down a career and game-high 11 rebounds to record his second double-double of the year.  Sophomore forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and junior guard Mike Edwards (Richmond, VA/Steward School) each chipped in 12 points as the Tigers moved to 8-0 overall on the year and collected win No. 50 for third-year head coach Bubba Smith.  Russell Brereton and Michael Garrett scored 14 and 13 points respectively for Old Westbury, which fell to 5-3 overall. 

The Tigers shot 49.1 percent (26-of-53) from the floor, canned 11-of-22 (50%) from three point range and hit on 14-of-18 (77.8%) from the charity stripe.  Hampden-Sydney also out-rebounded Old Westbury, 37-30, and recorded a season-high 22 assists as a team thanks to the efforts of freshman point guard Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan Academy) and junior point guard Matt Green (Richmond, VA/Thomas Dale) who combined for nine assists and just two turnovers.  The Panthers meanwhile, shot 42.6% (26-of-61) from the floor, made just 4-of-20 (25%) from three point range and connected on just 6-of-12 (50%) from the foul line. 

Senior guard Sean Kelly scored 15 points and grabbed ten rebounds, while junior guard Brain Zukowski scored 13 to go with 12 rebounds in leading Wheaton College to a 67-60 win over Neumann.  The Lyons never trailed after the 18:20 mark of the first half and built a huge rebounding margin, 46-32, over the Knights. 

Neumann was led by James Swigget, who finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, while Eric Lawton came off-the-bench to add 11 points as the Knights shot 38.3 percent (23-of-60) from the floor, made 5-of-13 (38.5%) from three-point range and dropped in 9-of-12 (75%) from the foul line. 

Kristopher Pedra added 11 points to give the Lyons three players in double-figures in scoring.  Wheaton connected on 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the floor, made 4-of-14 (28.6%) from beyond the arc and hit on 11-of-23 (47.8%) from the foul line. 

Neumann will meet SUNY-Old Westbury at 2 pm Friday, December 30, in the tournament consolation game, while host Hampden-Sydney will face Wheaton at 4 pm in the championship contest in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium.  The game will be broadcast live on FM 95.7 WFLO and on the internet at www.hsc.edu/athletics.
