BASKETBALL TIGERS DEFEAT BRIDGEWATER, 72-58

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 2, 2008)—The Hampden-Sydney basketball team held Bridgewater College to just 24 points in the second half to earn a 72-58 victory over the Eagles at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.  With the game tied 34-34 at halftime, the Tigers used strong defensive pressure to hold the Eagles to 30.0 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from behind-the-arc.  The Tigers were led by senior guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) who finished with a game-high 19 points.   With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 10-8 on the season and 4-7 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Eagles drop to 9-7 and 4-6 in the conference.

Hampden-Sydney and Bridgewater opened the game trading baskets as the first six minutes had four lead changes and two ties.  Leading 14-11, Bridgewater went on a 5-0 run to build a 19-11 lead with 12:57 left in the first half.  Hampden-Sydney answered with a 16-3 run to take a five-point lead, 27-22, on a pair of three-point field goals from freshman guard Brent Dillard (Dalzell, SC/Camden Military Academy).  Bridgewater took a 34-32 lead with just a 1:58 seconds remaining, but the Tigers' Paul Matthews (Greenburg, PA/Greenburg Salem) sank two free throws to tie the game at halftime, 34-34.

In the early portion of the second half, the Tigers hit three shots from behind-the-arc to build a nine-point advantage, 43-34.  Hampden-Sydney was able to maintain their lead, building an 11-point advantage, 50-39, with just 10:13 left to play.  Bridgewater answered with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to four points, 50-46, but the Tigers went on a 10-2 run over a four minute span to take a 60-48 lead.  The Tigers took their biggest lead of the game, 69-53, on a pair of free throws by Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and went on for the 72-58 win.

Hampden-Sydney was led by Prehmus with 19 points and 4 assists, while sophomore guard Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) finished with 17 points and a game-high seven rebounds.  Also scoring in double-figures was Kaase with 14 points, while Brent Dillard came off the bench to score a career-high nine points for the Tigers.   Dominic Trawick led the Eagles with 15 points, while Michael Oblitey chipped in with 14 points and a team-high four assists.

The Tigers shot 45.5 (25-of-55) percent from the field, including 50.0 (12-of-24) percent from behind-the-arc, and 83.3 (10-of-12) percent from the charity stripe.  Bridgewater finished the game at 42.9 percent from the field and 47.4 percent from three-point range.  The Eagles connected on 68.4 percent of their free throws.  The Tigers were able to out-rebound the Eagles, 33-26.
