HAMPDEN-SYDNEY EARNS 71-56 WIN OVER NEW JERSEY CITY

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (January 5, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney increased their winning streak to seven games as the Tigers defeated the New Jersey City Gothic Knights, 71-56, on Saturday evening on the second day of the Christopher Newport Captains Classic.   The Tigers held the Gothic Knights' leading scorer to just ten points on 4-of-16 shooting from the field, while the entire New Jersey City team shot 37.3 percent for the game, making just 22-of-59 attempts.  Hampden-Sydney was led by sophomore Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) as he finished with 19 points, six rebounds, and two blocks.  With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 7-1 on the season, while the loss drops New Jersey City to 8-4 overall.

New Jersey City built an early 5-0 lead just three minutes into the game, but the Tigers answered with an 16-2 run to take a 16-7 lead, capped off by a three-point basket by Paul Matthews (Greenburg, PA/Greenburg Salem) at the 10:17 mark.  New Jersey City hit a three-pointer to cut the Tiger lead to six points, but the Tigers continued to build their lead, using a 12-2 run to take a commanding 28-12 advantage with just four and a half minutes remaining until the half.  The Gothic Knights were able to close out the first half with an 11-0 run, but Hampden-Sydney would maintain their advantage, holding a 28-23 lead at halftime.

In the second half, The Tigers increased their lead to 17 points, 42-25, as the Tigers went on a 14-2 run in the first six minutes of the half which included several baskets by King and senior guard Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School).  Trailing 44-28, New Jersey City went on a 15-6 run to cut Hampden-Sydney's lead to seven points, 50-43, with 8:26 to play.  The Tigers responded building a comfortable lead down the strectch, which they maintained to earn the 71-56 victory.

The Tigers had four players score in double figures and were led by Turner King with 19 points, while Drew Prehmus finished with 15 points.  Also scoring in double-figures were Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and Tyler Murray (Atlanta, GA/Harrison) with 12 and 11 points respectively, while Murray finished with a game-high nine rebounds.  The Gothic Knights were led by Dana John who scored ten points, while Shy Martinez and Josh Lopez added nine points apeice. 

The Tigers shot 50.9 (27-of-53) percent from the field, including 45.0 (9-of-20) percent from behind-the-arc but just made 57.1 (8-of-14) percent from the charity stripe.  New Jersey City finished the game at 37.3 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from the free-throw line but made 44.4 percent from three-point range.  The Tigers were able to out-rebounded the Gothic Knights, 40-30.
