HAMPDEN-SYDNEY BEATS SUNY - OLD WESTBURY, 80-70 Greensboro Defeats Mississippi College, Pride and Tigers Set to Play in Tourney Championship
SUNY - Old Westbury vs. Hampden-Sydney Box Score HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (December 29, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney College sophomore guard Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) scored 20 points to lead five Tigers in double-figures as the Tigers beat SUNY - Old Westbury, 80-70, in the opening round of the 2007 Weenie Miller Memorial Holiday Hoops Tournament. Also scoring in double-figures for the Tigers was senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) as he scored 14 points. With the win, Hampden-Sydney improves to 3-1 overall, while the Panthers drop to 4-6. In the late afternoon game, Greensboro improved to 5-4 overall on the year with a 78-71 victory over Mississippi College. With the loss, the Choctaws dropped to 5-2 overall. Joining Turner King and Troy Kasse with double-figures in points were guards Byron Lawton (High Point, NC/Wesleyan Academy) and Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) with 11 points, while Paul Matthews (Greenburg, PA/Greenburg-Salem) finished with ten points. Leading the Panthers was Kenneth Eusey with 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting from three-point range, while Garthlette James and Lester Prosper chipped in with 15 and 14 points respectively. In the first half, Hampden-Sydney and SUNY - Old Westbury battled back and forth, trading leads several times. With five minutes remaining in the opening frame, the Tigers built a five-point advantage, 30-25. The Panters would cut the lead to one-point, 34-33, with 3:10 left, but the Tigers responded, building a four point halftime advantage, 41-37. In the second half, the Tigers continued to build on their lead, taking a 64-51 advantage with 7:08 remaining. The Panthers would respond, cutting the lead to just six points a minute later, but would come up short as the Tigers scored a 80-70 victory. The Tigers shot 57.4 percent (27-of-47) from the floor, made 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from three-point range, and made 14-of-19 (73.7%) shots from the charity stripe. The Panthers shot 44.3% (27-of-61) from the floor, made just 6-of-18 (33.3%) from three point range, and connected on 10-of-13 (76.9%) from the foul line. SUNY - Old Westbury out-rebounded the Tigers, 30-29. Greensboro's Adam Nicholson scored 23 points to lead the Pride to a 78-71 win over Mississippi College. Bruce Zamuel scored 17 points for the Pride, while Theo Tamini finished with 11 points. Greensboro led for the entire game, with only two ties in the early stages. Mississippi College was led by Prince Trotter with 20 points, while KiKi Christmas scored 17 points. The Pride shot 50.0 percent (29-of-58) from the floor and dropped in 18-of-22 (81.8%) from the foul line. The Choctaws finished shooting 47.7 percent from the field, but shot 20.0 percent from behind-the-arc and 54.5 percent from the foul line. SUNY - Old Westbury will meet Mississippi College at 2:00 pm Sunday, December 30, in the tournament consolation game, while Greensboro will face Hampden-Sydney at 4:00 pm in the championship contest in S.
