HAMPDEN-SYDNEY FALLS SHORT AGAINST ROANOKE, 67-65 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (January 26, 2008)—Hampden-Sydney erased a ten-point deficit to tie the game with just seconds remaining but fell short against 24th-ranked Roanoke, 67-65, on Saturday afternoon at S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium. Hampden-Sydney enjoyed balanced scoring as four players scored in double-figures, led by Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) with 18 points. With the loss, Hampden-Sydney drops to 9-6 on the season and 3-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Maroons improve to 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the ODAC. Early in the first half of action, the Tigers built a 10-5 advantage on three-point field goals from Turner King and Drew Prehmus (Atlanta, GA/Wesleyan School) at the 15:03 mark. The Tigers increased their lead to 11 points, 18-7, on another three-pointer by King. The Tigers continued to hold a lead, taking a 32-21 advantage on lay-in by senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) with 3:21 left to play in the first half. Over the final three and a half minutes, the Maroons closed the first half on an 11-0 run to tie the game at halftime, 32-32. To start the second half, both teams traded baskets, trading the lead four times and tying the game three times. Roanoke took a six-point advantage, 44-38, on a pair of free throws by A.J. Dowell. The Maroons took their largest lead of the game, 56-45, at the 8:22 mark. Trailing by eight points, 65-57, with just 2:27 left to play, Hampden-Sydney went on an 8-0 run to tie the game, 65-65, on lay-up by Kaase just under a minute left to play. After both teams committed turnovers, Roanoke's A.J. Dowell went to the line, making two free throws, to give the Maroons the 67-65 win. Hampden-Sydney had four players score in double figures and was led by sophomore Turner King with 18 points, while sophomore Karlis Trops (Riga, Latvia/Charlotte Latin) finished with 14 points. Also scoring in double-figures for the Tigers were Kaase and Prehmus with ten points apiece. Junior forward Jyri Laakso (Oulu, Finland/Makelanrinne) finished with a game-high eight rebounds. Roanoke was led by A.J. Dowell who scored 21 points and dished out four assists, while Curtis Peery finished 19 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. The Tigers shot 40.0 (22-of-55) percent from the field, including 30.8 (8-of-26) percent from behind-the-arc, and 92.9 (13-of-14) percent from the charity stripe, while the Maroons finished at 53.2 percent from the field and 33.3 from behind-the-arc. The Tigers out-rebounded the Maroons, 33-27. The Tigers return to action on Sunday, January 27, as the Tigers will travel to Lexington, VA to face ODAC-foe Washington and Lee University.
