TWO BASKETBALL TIGERS EARN ALL-STATE ACCOLADES

NEWPORT NEWS, VA (April 23, 2008)—Two members of the Hampden-Sydney basketball team earned all-state honors as announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID).  The all-state teams are nominated and voted on by the Sports Information Directors from around the Commonwealth of Virginia annually.  Sophomore guard Turner King (Roanoke, VA/Roanoke Catholic) earned first-team honors, while senior forward Troy Kaase (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) was named to the honorable mention team.

King earned first team state honors after averaging 19.3 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest.  King led the Tigers in scoring in 16 of Hampden-Sydney's 27 contests and was led the team in rebounds in nine of those games.  The sophomore shot nearly 49 percent from the field, 40 percent from three-point range, and just over 84 percent from the free throw line.  King started all 27 games for the Tigers, earning first-team All-ODAC honors.

Kaase earned honorable mention all-state honors after averaging 15.8 points per game and a team-leading 7.3 rebounds per contest on the season.  Kaase led the team with 26 blocks.  Despite suffering a season-ending knee injury during his junior season, Kaase surpassed the 1,000 point mark this season against Washington and Lee on Sunday, January 27.  For his career, the senior has scored 1,176 points.  Starting all 27 games for the Tigers this season, the senior earned second-team All-ODAC honors.  Kaase was a first-team all-state selection during his sophomore season in 2005-2006.

Shenandoah's Jeremiah Lawrence earned Player of the Year honors, while Washington & Lee's Adam Hutchinson was named Coach of the Year.  Ferrum's Derek Mitchell took Rookie of the Year honors.  The all-state teams are as follows:
