BASKETBALL TIGERS PICKED TO FINISH THIRD IN PRESEASON POLL

SALEM, VA (November 1, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney’s basketball team was picked to finish third in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference for the upcoming 2007-2008 season according to the preseason coaches poll as announced by the conference office at the annual media day on Thursday.  The third-place selection follows the Tigers Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship season in 2007, the school's tenth conference title. 

The Tigers will be led by fifth-year coach Bubba Smith with Mike Blaine and Matt Green serving as the assistant coaches.  Hampden-Sydney returns three starters and 11 letter-winners from the 2006-2007 team that finished 19-11 overall and 10-8 in the ODAC.  Five newcomers will look to make an immediate impact for the Tigers.

Guilford College was picked to finish first in the conference with five first-place votes, followed by Virginia Wesleyan and Hampden-Sydney, with three and two first-place votes respectively.  The complete ODAC poll is as follows:

Hampden-Sydney will open its season on Tuesday, November 20, as the Tigers will travel to Danville, VA to face Averett University at 7:00 pm.  Catch all the live action on 95.7 WFLO.
