XC TIGERS COMPETE AT NCAA DIII SOUTH/SOUTHEAST REGIONALS WILLIAMSBURG, VA (October 13, 2007)—Two Hampden-Sydney harriers competed at the 2007 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships this past Saturday, Nov. 10 in Williamsburg, Virginia and capped off strong finishes to great seasons. The field of competitors was full of the top teams and individuals from the entire South/Southeast Region of Division III colleges and universities and the Tigers stepped up to gain valuable experience for further improvement. Junior captain George Heeschen (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) finished 87th overall with a time of 29:03 and was followed closely by sophomore Robert Melvin (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon), who finished in 90th with a personal best time of 29:08. Freshman Daniel Isaacs (Troutville, VA/Lord Botetourt), was set to compete in this meet as well, but unfortunately suffered a shin injury earlier in the week. The meet came down to a very close finish between Rhodes College, Emory University, and University of Texas-Tyler, who were each separated by just one point. Rhodes and Emory each scored 76 points, but based on the tie-breaker system, Rhodes earned the title. University of Texas-Tyler was a very close third place with 77 points. Both Rhodes College and Emory University qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships to be held Nov. 17 in Northfield, Minnesota. Three ODAC schools placed in the top ten - Washington and Lee University (fourth), Bridgewater College (sixth), and Lynchburg College (eighth). -www.hsc.edu/athletics-
