XC TIGERS PLACE FOURTH AT MARLIN INVITATIONAL

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (September 1, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney cross country captain George Heeschen (Earlysville, VA/Albemarle) placed 16th overall to lead the Tigers to a fourth place finish at the Virginia Wesleyan Marlin Invitational this past Saturday. Heeschen recorded a time of 30:22.1, just five seconds better than teammate Robert Melvin (Alexandria, VA/Mount Vernon), who came in 18th place with a time of 30:27.8. The team's fourth place finish is two spots higher than last years Marlin Invitational result.

The University of Mary Washington placed first in the event with just 17 points, as UMW's own Frank Devar topped the field with a time of 27:47.0, over 30 seconds faster than second place finisher Matt Cash, also from Mary Washington. Virginia Wesleyan (56 points) and Guilford (122) followed in the second and third slots, respectively.

The Tigers also received a strong effort from sophomore Joe Stiles (Southbury, CT/Pomperaug), who placed third for the team and 32nd in overall team scoring with a time of 33:49.2.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action this Saturday at 11 am as the team will participate in the Washington and Lee Invitational in Lexington, VA.
