Game Box Score

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (October 23, 2004)—Hampden-Sydney College junior running back Johnny Junes (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) tied a school record with four rushing touchdowns to help lead the 18th-ranked (AFCA) football Tigers to a 41-26 victory over Catholic University of America in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Saturday.  With the win, the Tigers improve to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in ODAC play as Catholic falls to 0-7 and 0-3.

Junes scored on rushes of 45, 16, 14 and one yard as the Tigers rolled up 519 yards of offense on the Cardinals.  Meanwhile, sophomore quarterback Brett Delk (Columbus, MS/Caledonia) made his first collegiate start in place of injured All-America quarterback J.D. Ricca (Gaithersburg, MD/St. John’s) and completed 12-of-21 passes for 198 yards and a touchdown.  Tiger junior wide receiver Brian Rolander (Exmore, VA/Broadwater) led the air-attack and he surpassed the 100-yard mark for the third time in his last four games with four catches for 146 yards and one touchdown.

Catholic was led by Pat Truxillo who scored on a 32-yard scamper in the third quarter and also caught a three-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter.  For the day, Truxillo recorded 116 all-purpose yards with the two TDs.  Catholic quarterback Anthony Durham completed 21-of-33 passes for 215 yards and two touchdowns, one going to Truxillo and the other on a 34-yard pass to Ryan Bowman.  Running back Ed Smith accounted for the Cardinals first touchdown of the day on a one-yard rush in the second quarter.

Hampden-Sydney’s defense limited its fifth opponent of the year to under 100 yards on the ground as the Tigers held Catholic to a net total of 42 yards rushing on 22 carries.  Meanwhile, Hampden-Sydney racked up 259 yards on the ground thanks to a season-high 47 carries as Junes finished the game with 130 yards on 18 attempts, while senior back C.W. Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) picked up 74 yards on 12 first-half attempts.

Hampden-Sydney opened a 28-7 halftime advantage, thanks to two touchdowns by Junes, a 28-yard touchdown reception by freshman Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) from tight end Ben Dull (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) and Rolander’s TD reception.  Ed Smith’s one-yard rumble with 1:54 to play in the second quarter helped the Cardinals cut a 28-0 Tiger lead to 21 before the break.

In the third quarter, Junes scored two more times, offsetting Truxillo’s first touchdown of the game on a 32-yard scamper.  The fourth quarter belonged to the Cardinals as Durham hit Bowman and Truxillo for touchdowns, yet CUA missed both of its extra point attempts to make the final, 41-26.

Senior defensive linemen James Riley (Richmond, VA/James River) and Chris Gould (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) paced the Tiger defensive attack as each had four tackles and two tackles for loss on the afternoon, while Gould finished with a pair of sacks for a loss of 21 yards as Riley had one sack for a loss of 16.  Meanwhile, freshman Mark Henson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) recorded his first collegiate interception midway through the first half.

Dave Beety led the Cardinals with seven tackles, while Ed Dahl finished with six tackles and one and one-half tackles for loss to go with two pass breakups.
