CLEMMONS, LaFLAME EARN ODAC WEEKLY HONORS
SALEM, VA (September 6, 2004)—Hampden-Sydney College senior running back CW Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) was named Old Dominion Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week while senior linebacker Ty LaFlame (Mechanicsville, VA/Atlee) was selected as the ODAC Defensive Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. The pair helped lead the 20th-ranked (D3football.com) Tigers to a 35-17 victory over Sewanee in the season opener Saturday. Clemmons tallied 178 total yards on offense and two touchdowns as he ran the ball nine times for 74 yards (8.2 ypr) and a touchdown and caught five passes for 71 yards and a score for the Tigers. The two touchdowns moved the senior to within 30 points or five touchdowns of setting the all-time career scoring record in H-SC football history. Clemmons’ 212 career points is currently fourth-best all-time, with Jimmy Ferguson’s (’78) 241 points the current high water mark. LaFlame recorded a career-high 13 tackles (four solo/nine assisted) for the Tiger defense which limited Sewanee to just over 200 yards on the day. LaFlame led a Hampden-Sydney trio in double figures in tackles as Daniel Park (Richmond, VA/Fork Union) and Michael Clark (Madison Heights, VA/Amherst) recorded 12 and 11 respectively. LaFlame and the Tiger defensive unit surrendered just ten points and forced three Sewanee turnovers. Hampden-Sydney, ranked as high as sixth by Sports Illustrated in the preseason, will return to action Saturday, September 11, as the Tigers travel to Gettysburg, PA, to take on the Gettysburg College Bullets at 1 pm. -www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
