CLEMMONS , RICCA GARNER PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA HONORS

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (July 19, 2004)—Hampden-Sydney College football players CW Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) and JD Ricca (Gaithersburg, MD/St. John’s) have each been tabbed preseason all-Americans by Don Hansen’s Football Gazette.  Ricca has also been selected as a First Team Preseason All-American by Lindy’s.

CW

Clemmons, a senior running back, was picked by the Football Gazette as a second team preseason all-American.  The six-foot-one, 225-pound, workhorse is coming off a career-year in which he led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference with 1,187 yards on 163 carries, while he also ranked second nationally with 24 touchdowns, including 18 on the ground and six receiving.

JD Ricca

Ricca, a junior quarterback, was a first team pick by Lindy’s and a third-team pick by the Football Gazette.  The 2003 Virginia SID College Division State Player of the Year had the most prolific passing season of any Hampden-Sydney quarterback last year as he completed 206-of-336 passes for 3,032 yards and 29 touchdowns while tossing just ten interceptions.

Both players were First Team All-ODAC, All-South and All-State in 2003 as the Tigers completed the season with a 9-1 record and ranked 22nd nationally.  This year, the team has garnered a No. 13 preseason ranking by Street and Smith’s as six starters return on offense and nine on defense.
