The win gives the Tigers (1-0) their third straight season opening victory over Sewanee in as many years. Sewanee took an early 3-0 lead on a 27-yard field goal by Jake Roberts with 10:18 to play in the opening quarter. Hampden-Sydney came back to score twice in the first quarter as senior running back CW Clemmons (Covington, VA/Alleghany) rambled in from 16 yards out, while freshman Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) made his first collegiate reception count as he caught JD Ricca’s (Gaithersburg, MD/St. John’s) 18-yard pass with 2:33 to play in the first quarter. Trailing 14-3 after the break, Sewanee’s first drive of the second half culminated in a three-yard scoring strike by halfback Philip Suggs to cut the Tiger lead to just four points. Hampden-Sydney responded immediately with a ten-play 70-yard drive that ended on a 19-yard scoring pass from Ricca to Clemmons. The Tigers came back early in the fourth quarter with their fourth TD of the game as Junes found the endzone on a one-yard dive. After a Sewanee three-and-out, the Tigers took 61 yards in two and one-half minutes with Junes sticking it in the endzone on another one-yard scramble to give the Tigers a 35-10 lead. Sewanee’s Mike Glanton picked off a Brett Delk (Columbus, MS/Caldedonia) pass and took it 56 yards the other way for a touchdown with just under two minutes to play in the contest to round out the scoring for both teams. Overall, Hampden-Sydney compiled 397 yards of offense, while the Tiger defense limited Sewanee to just 202 yards. Ricca completed 14-of-28 passes for 219 yards and two TDs, while Clemmons rambled for 78 yards on nine carries.
