WILKES-BARRE, PA (September 15, 2007)—The Hampden-Sydney football team won their second consecutive game on Saturday as the Tigers scored a 35-33 victory over King’s College at Betzler Field.  Trailing 33-29 with six minutes remaining, the Tigers took a 35-33 advantage and held on over the final three minutes to preserve the victory.

Hampden-Sydney’s Drew Walker (Midlothian, VA/Blessed Sacrament-Huguenot) rushed for 83 yards on 12 carries, scoring one touchdown for the Tigers on the ground.  Senior receiver Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 33, while catching seven passes for 114 yards and two scores.

On their first possession of the game, the Tigers marched 82 yards on six plays, scoring on a Walker five yard touchdown rush.   With the two-point conversion, Hampden-Sydney took an 8-0 lead only two minutes into the game.  King’s answered as John Cataldo scored on a three yard run, making the score 8-7.

On the Tigers’ next possession, Zach Miller (Lebanon, VA/Lebanon) took a reverse 18 yards to extend the lead to eight, 15-7.  After a couple of stops, Hampden-Sydney scored again as Corey Sedlar (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) found Drew Smith for a 30-yard scoring strike.

Both teams would add a touchdown late in the second quarter, giving the Tigers a 29-14 halftime advantage over the Monarchs.

In the third quarter, the defenses prevailed as both teams had scoring opportunities, but neither team was able to capitalize.  In the fourth quarter, King’s scored three unanswered touchdowns, including a Jeremia Jones 35-yard run to give the Monarchs a 33-29 lead.

Only 23 seconds later, Sedlar found Smith for the second time on the afternoon as they hooked up for a 47-yard touchdown pass, giving the Tigers a 35-33 lead.  King’s would have two opportunities with less than three minutes remaining; however, in each case, the Tiger defense rose to the occasion.  With 47 seconds remaining, sophomore Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s) intercepted a Jeff Searfass pass to seal the victory.

The Tigers gained 151 yards on the ground and 217 through the air for 368 yards of total offense on 58 plays, while the Monarchs gained 448 yards on 88 plays.  Both teams were victims of three turnovers, while the Tigers committed nine penalties for 99 yards. 

The Tigers were led defensively by senior linebacker Mark Henson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) made 15 total tackles, including five solo stops, while sophomore Boaz Young-el (Hopewell, VA/Prince George) made 12 stops on the afternoon.  The Monarchs’ Alex Watty recorded eight tackles.
