TIGERS UPENDED BY EMORY AND HENRY, 29-19 EMORY, VA (October 6, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney College out-gained the Wasps as the Tigers tallied 413 total yards of offense, but fell short to ODAC-rival Emory and Henry, 29-19, on Saturday at Fullerton Field. Running back Josh Simpson (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) rushed for 106 yards and scored one touchdown for the Tigers in the losing effort. With the victory, Emory and Henry improves to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the ODAC, while the Tigers fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. Hampden-Sydney tallied 128 yards on the ground and 285 yards in the air as the Tigers lost to the Wasps for the first time since 2001. Hampden-Sydney was led by Simpson as he had 106 yards rushing on 24 carries and one rushing touchdown along with nine catches for 110 yards and one receiving touchdown. Matt Gillespie led the Wasps rushing attack with a game-high 130 yards on 35 carries. In the first quarter, Emory and Henry took an early 3-0 advantage on a Tiger fumble, but the Tigers responded as Simpson scored on two yard touchdown run to take a 7-3 lead. Emory and Henry’s Dustin Rexrode took an interception 31 yards to regain lead, 10-7, in the first frame. In the second quarter, Caleb Moore increased the Wasps’ lead to nine points on a one yard run, 16-7. Only a minute later, Luke Hawk made a 26 yard field goal to give the Wasps a 12-point advantage, 19-7, with 6:01 remaining until half. Over the final three minutes, Hampden-Sydney scored on two consecutive possessions, including two touchdown passes from Corey Sedlar (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) as he found Josh Simpson and Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) to tie the game at halftime, 19-19. In the third quarter, Emory and Henry took the lead on a Gavin Hayes four yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Keene, giving the Wasps the 26-19 lead. The Wasps drive was 18 plays and took nearly eight minutes as the Wasps converted on the fourth-down fake field goal attempt. The Wasps increased their lead to ten points on a Hawk 20-yard field goal, proving to be enough as the Tigers were scoreless in the second half. The Wasps forced seven turnovers on the afternoon, earning the 29-19 victory over the Tigers. On the afternoon, Sedlar completed 27-of-50 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns to go along with three interceptions. For the Wasps, Daniel Booher finished the afternoon completing 12-of-21 passes for 117 yards and one interception. Senior receiver Drew Smith made 11 catches for 108 yards and one touchdown. The Tiger defense was led by linebacker Kyle Booker (Gloucester, VA/Fork Union) with 11 tackles, while Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher’s) recorded nine stops, including five tackles-for-a-loss of 14 yards. Boaz Young-el (Hopewell, VA/Prince George) made four tackles while also recording interception. Emory and Henry's Evin O’Sullivan led the Wasps with a game-high 12 tackles, while Bryan Furr recorded five stops and intercepted two passes. Hampden-Sydney returns to action next week as the Tigers will welcome Washington and Lee University to Everett Stadium on October 13 at 1:00 pm for Homecoming Weekend.
