Smith and Favret Named ODAC Player and Coach of the Year SALEM, VA (November 21, 2007)Hampden-Sydney's football team placed ten athletes on the All-ODAC squads released by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference office. Hampden-Sydney finished the year as the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Champions with an 8-3 overall record and 5-1 mark in the conference. Seven offensive players, two defensive players, and one special teams member were named to the all-conference squads. For the second time during his tenure at Hampden-Sydney, Marty Favret was named ODAC Coach of the Year. Senior wide receiver Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) earned ODAC Offensive Player of the Year honors and was named to the first-team as the senior set several Hampden-Sydney single-season and career records during the 2007 campaign. During the 2007 season, Smith caught 110 passes for 1,616 yards, the second-best yardage mark in league single-season history, and eight receiving touchdowns. Joining Smith on the first team is junior running back Josh Simpson (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin). In just his junior season, Simpson shattered several H-SC and ODAC scoring records as he rushed for 1,042 yards on 247 carries for 21 rushing touchdowns while also catching 62 passes for 670 yards and six scores. Senior offensive lineman Eric Mendel (Lynchburg, VA/Brookville) also garnered first team honors, the first of his career. Rounding out the Tiger first team honorees is senior tight end Josh Baumgartner (Vinton, VA/William Byrd) as he had 31 receptions for 323 yards and four touchdowns. Four Tigers were named to the second-team. In just his first season as the starting quarterback, sophomore Corey Sedlar (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) completed 265-of-410 passes for 3,426 yards and 24 touchdowns. Sedlar also rushed for four touchdowns. On the defensive side of the ball, senior linebacker Kyle Booker (Gloucester, VA/Fork Union) earned second-team honors after leading the Tiger defense with 90 tackles on the season. Booker also recorded 6.5 tackles-for-loss and intercepted two passes. Sedlar and Booker were joined on the second-team by a pair of juniors. Punter T.C. Stevens (Alton, VA/Halifax) received second-team nods for the second season, while Brian Gay (Chesterfield, VA/Lloyd C. Bird) receives the first All-ODAC honor of his career. Stevens averaged 39.5 yards-per-punt, placing ten points inside the 20-yard line. Earning honorable mention honors for Hampden-Sydney was a pair of seniors, Mark Henson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and Michael Brooks (Glen Allen, VA/Hermitage). Henson wrapped up his playing career in fine fashion as he finished the season with 74 tackles, 4.5 tackles-for-loss, intercepting one pass and recovering two fumbles.
