FOOTBALL TIGERS NAME CAPTAINS FOR 2007 SEASON

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (February 20, 2007)—Four members of the Hampden-Sydney College football team have been named captains for the 2007 football season as announced by head coach Marty Favret.  Seniors Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Kyle Booker (Gloucester, VA/Fork Union) return as captains, while senior Mark Henson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and junior Jamie Edlow (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) will lead the Tigers next season as well. 

Drew Smith highlights the list as the 2004 ODAC Rookie of the Year scored first team All-ODAC honors in 2005 after ranking third in the conference and NCAA with 79 receptions for 1,284 yards and 13 touchdowns. In 2006, Smith had another solid season as the junior captain caught 52 passes for 696 yards and six touchdowns and earned second team All-ODAC honors.

Booker also returns as a captain for the 2007 football Tigers.  Booker was a two-year starter at safety for the Tigers as he ranked sixth on the team in 2005 with 51 tackles, while he also had two interceptions, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.  In 2006, as an outside linebacker, Booker was second on the team with 58 total tackles, including a team-high 12.5 tackles-for-loss and six sacks.

Edlow, a two-time second team All-ODAC honoree, led the Tigers with 63 totals tackles in 2006.  Edlow intercepted two passes, was in on 14 pass break-ups, and forced four fumbles.  As a freshman in 2005, Edlow was fifth on the team with 51 tackles and intercepted a team-high six passes.

Henson recorded 24 total tackles in 2006 and a career-high 26 tackles in 2005.  Henson also had two sacks and five tackles-for-loss that season.

Hampden-Sydney’s football team is coming off a 2006 season in which it recorded a 4-6 overall record and 4-2 mark in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference.  The Tiger football team has won 37 games over the last five seasons and will be looking for its first ODAC Championship in over 20 years in 2007.
