FOOTBALL TIGERS PICKED FIFTH IN ODAC PRESEASON POLL

SALEM, VA (August 7, 2007)—The Hampden-Sydney College football team was picked to finish in fifth place according to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference preseason poll published Tuesday at the annual media day event at the Salem Civic Center.  Hampden-Sydney has finished in second place in the regular season standings in each of the last six seasons.

The Tigers return 16 starters, including seven on offense, six on defense, and three special teams players, from a team that turned in a 4-6 overall record in 2006.  Senior Drew Smith (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and junior Josh Simpson (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) return to lead the Tiger offense, while sophomore Craig Warnement (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) returns after starting at quarterback as a true freshman a season ago.

Despite returning only six starters, the Tigers defense will be talented and will look to improve on a defensive unit that ranked sixth in the ODAC in 2006.  Captains Kyle Booker (Gloucester, VA/Fork Union) and Mark Henson (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) return to lead the group.

Bridgewater College was once again chosen as the preseason favorite with five first place votes, while Washington and Lee is picked to finish second after winning the conference title a season ago.  The complete ODAC poll is as follows:
1. Bridgewater (5)
2. Washington and Lee (2)
3. Guilford
4. Emory and Henry
5. Hampden-Sydney
6. Catholic
7. Randolph-Macon

The 2007 season kicks off as the Tigers will host Johns Hopkins University on Saturday, September 1 at 1:00 pm.
