2003 Hampden-Sydney College Hall of Fame Inductees
Hampden-Sydney College and the
Athletics Hall of Fame will induct its 16th class on Saturday,
November 8, at 11 am in Gammon Gymnasium. The
Class of 2003 includes four spectacular former student-athletes representing
four different decades.
Charles Finley Talbot was an outstanding basketball and tennis player from
1929 through 1932, while George “Mouse” Misenhelter (Verona, PA) was
a member of the Tigers basketball and baseball teams from 1949 through 1952.
Bobby Long (Richmond, VA) was a member of two of the best
football teams in Hampden-Sydney football history from 1968 through 1972, while Will
Hicks (Richmond, VA) represents the younger generation as a member of the
baseball team from 1990 through 1993.
 Charles Finley Talbot, basketball/tennis,
1929-1932
Talbot came to Hampden-Sydney from Tsing Kiang Pu, China, where his
father was a missionary. He won the Virginia State singles title
three times and teamed with Rogers Thomas to win the doubles
championship three years in a row. He also teamed with W.D. Sloan to
win the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament at The
Greenbrier in West Virginia in the early 1930's. A two-sport
athlete, he played basketball in 1932, helping the Tigers to a 9-6
overall record and wins over Roanoke, Lynchburg, Randolph-Macon, and
William and Mary. Talbot is deceased.
George Dick “Mouse” Misenhelter, basketball,
baseball, 1949-1952
A four-year letterman for the Tigers in basketball Misenhelter, at
five-foot-six, was an outstanding passer who also could score. He
teamed with Hampden-Sydney Hall of Famer Emerson Johnson to form one
of the most successful combinations in Tiger history. Playing his
last two seasons for coach Billy McCann, Misenhelter and the Tigers
compiled a 27-16 record. In what would be his final victory as a
basketball Tiger, Misenhelter scored 13 fourth-period points as H-SC
recovered from an 18-point deficit to defeat Virginia Tech, 83-82.
Also a second baseman on the H-SC baseball squad, Misenhelter hit
.333 in 1950. Dick Misenhelter lives in Verona, PA, with his wife
Lydia. He is a retired secondary school administrator.
Robert
"Bobby" C. Long, football, 1968-1972
A four-year letterman for the Hampden-Sydney football team, Long was
a quarterback, defensive back, tail back, split end, and kick and
punt returner. Long quarterbacked the Tigers to two Knute Rockne
Bowls and played on the only H-SC team ever to complete the regular
season with a 10-0 record, in 1971. He was voted outstanding
freshman and All-State Small College in 1968, and earned All-Mason
Dixon honors as a quarterback in 1971. He was 79-of-112 for 820
yards in passing in 1971. Long lives in Richmond, VA, with his wife
Barbara Jean. He is now a corporate vice president for UBS Financial Services
Inc.
Will Hicks, baseball, 1990-1993
As a catcher on the Tiger baseball team he earned First Team All-ODAC
honors in both 1990 and 1992. Hicks earned All-South Region honors
in 1993. He batted over .400 in a season twice in his career, .440
in 1990 and .417 in 1991, while his 43 hits in 1991 rank ninth-best
all-time and his 37 RBI the same year rank third. Hicks holds the
records for best career batting average (.395) and career walks (74).
He rates second all-time in hits (138), third in RBI (97), third in
slugging percentage (.624), fourth in homers (14), eighth in at bats
(349), and ninth in runs scored (79). Hicks lives in Richmond, VA,
with his wife Jennifer. He is a math teacher and assistant football
and baseball coach at JR Tucker High School.
Hampden-Sydney Athletics Hall of Fame
The
Hampden-Sydney Athletic Hall of Fame was created in 1988 and is designed to
honor men who have made outstanding contributions to Hampden-Sydney athletics
and have helped bring recognition, honor, excellence and distinction to the
College and its intercollegiate athletics program. Members are selected annually by the Hall of Fame Committee
from nominations submitted by alumni and friends of the College.
