LACROSSE TIGERS SCORE TWICE IN LAST MINUTE TO DEFEAT HAVERFORD COLLEGE, 9-8

ALEXANDRIA, VA (March 3, 2007)—Hampden-Sydney’s lacrosse team showed its resiliency as they scored two goals in the final minute of regulation time to earn a 9-8 victory over Haverford College on Saturday at St. Stephen's School in Alexandria, VA.  Senior Ryan Harrington (Dallas, TX/Plano) and sophomore Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) scored the late goals to lift Hampden-Sydney past the fords.  With the win, the Tigers improve to 2-0, while the Fords fall to 0-2 on the season.

Junior Kelly Mattie (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfied) scored three goals, while Thomas Jennings (Murfreesboro, TN/Webb School) added two goals and an assist in Hampden-Sydney's victory over Haverford College.  Senior William Shell (Alexandria, VA/St. Stephen's) also had a solid performance for the Tigers as he scored one goal and recorded one assist.

Haverford jumped out to an early lead over the Tigers as Matt Thorne-Fitzgerald, Brian Fleishhacker, and Mike Distler gave the Fords a 3-1 first quarter lead.  In the second quarter, the Tigers found themselves down 4-1, before Thomas Jennings went to work for Hampden-Sydney. 

At the 4:52 mark, Jennings notched a man-down goal as he beat several Fords' defenders en route to the goal.  Just 25 seconds later, Jennings fed Kelly Mattie for his second goal of the game.  With just over ten seconds remaining until halftime, Jennings scored his second goal of the game.  Mattie would net his third goal, assist from Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling) with two seconds remaining to give the Tigers a 5-4 halftime lead.  

In the third quarter, Hampden-Sydney maintained its lead as each team was able to manage only one goal, making the score, 6-5.  The offenses of both squads woke up in the fourth quarter as there were a combined six goals in the last 15 minutes.  With Hampden-Sydney leading, 7-5, Haverford scored three goals in a five minute span to give the Fords an 8-7 advantage.  With just under a minute remaining, Hampden-Sydney's Ryan Harrington tied the game as he scored an unassisted goal.  With 29 seconds left, Will Shell beat two defenders and found Andrew Mahoney in front of the net to put Hampden-Sydney ahead, 9-8. 

Freshman Whit Kelley (Raleigh, NC/Ravenscroft) won 9-of-15 face-offs, while Colin Dunn won 2-of-2 face-offs and grabbed 11 groundballs.  Senior Scott Russell (Darien, CT/Darien) recorded the victory for the Tigers in goal as he made 14 saves on 22 shots on goal.  Hampden-Sydney's defense stifled Haverford's man-up offense as the Fords only converted on one of their five man-up opportunities.  The Tigers scored two man-down goals.

Hampden-Sydney will return to action on Saturday, March 10, as the Tigers will host Marymount University at Hellmuth-Pritzlaff turf field.  The game is scheduled to start at 1:00 pm.
