ARLINGTON, VA (March 8, 2008)—Marymount University outscored Hampden-Sydney 9-1 in the second half to help erase a three goal halftime deficit and claim a 13-8 victory over the visiting Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Midfielder Kevin Conklin led the offensive attack for Marymount, registering three goals and two assists while Saints' goalkeeper Alex Hammer was magnificent in goal, recording 22 saves on the afternoon. The Tigers were led by junior attackman Andrew Mahoney (Littleton, CO/Littleton) and sophomore midfielder Andrew O'Shea (Richmond, VA/Collegiate) who scored two goals apiece. The loss drops Hampden-Sydney to 2-2 overall while the Saints improve to 3-1. After falling behind 2-0 with 8:42 remaining in the first period, the Tigers quickly gained control of the contest scoring five unanswered goals, taking a 5-2 lead on junior attackman Kenny Mathison's (East Northport, NY/Northport) with 11:31 to play in the first half. Following Conklin's first goal of the game that cut the Tigers' lead to 5-3, Hampden-Sydney sophomore midfielder Thomas Hovis (Richmond, VA/St. Christopher's) and junior midfielder Doug Carpenter (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) found the net to preserve a 7-4 Tiger lead at the break. Marymount returned the favor to begin the third period, scoring four consecutive goals to take an 8-7 lead with 5:31 remaining in the quarter. Mahoney answered just two minutes later to knot the score at 8, but that was the only strike for Hampden-Sydney in second half as the Tigers were held scoreless in the final 18 minutes of action. Marymount scored the final five goals of the contest, the last coming courtesy of Conklin with 16 seconds left in the final period, to steal the 13-8 victory. Tigers' senior midfielder Kyle Frazier (Forest, VA/Episcopal) turned in a solid effort, scooping a team-high six ground balls, followed by O'Shea (five) and the Tiger senior defensive trio of Colin Dunn (Chevy Chase, MD/Trinity Pawling), Alex Pritzlaff (Castle Rock, CO/Kent Denver) and Ian York (Charlottesville, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) all with four ground balls each. Hampden-Sydney out-shot Marymount 48-39, but snatched 11 fewer ground balls (51-40) and won just 6-of-25 face off opportunities. The Tigers will return home on Saturday, March 15 as they host 12th-ranked Cabrini College in the first game at the new Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Game time is set for 1 pm. www.hsc.edu/athletics- |
