HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney head soccer coach Josh Laux has selected four players to captain his 2008 soccer squad. Senior Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope) joins 2007 captains Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), Michael Krewinghaus (Williamsburg, VA/Tabb) and Ben Marchetti (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) as leaders of a team that figures to be in the hunt for Hampden-Sydney's first-ever Old Dominion Athletic Conference championship. "I feel that our team is in great hands under the leadership of these four seniors," said Laux.

H-SC freshman goalkeeper John Robert Plyler was named VaSID Rookie of the Year, and was joined by five teammates on the all-state soccer squad.

SIX SOCCER TIGERS EARN ALL-STATE HONORS

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - For the 2007 Hampden-Sydney Soccer Tigers, the accolades continue to pour in. Six Tigers were voted to the 2007 VaSID Men's Soccer College Division All-State Team as selected by Virginia Sports Information Directors. Hampden-Sydney's Jason Butler (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin), Jason Powell (Marietta, GA/Pope), Will Robertson (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) and Sam Turner (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) join Rookie of the Year John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) and Coach of the Year Josh Laux on the all-state roster.

2007 CAMPAIGN A SUCCESS, SETS TONE FOR 2008

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Digging out from a sluggish 1-4 start to their season, the young 2007 Hampden-Sydney soccer team regrouped and responded to piece together a fantastic 2007 campaign. The Tigers went 10-2-3 to close the season, compiling 11 wins, a 6-1-2 ODAC record, securing a No. 2 seed in the ODAC Tournament, where the squad eventually fell in a 2-1 heartbreaker to third-seeded Washington and Lee in the semifinals courtesy of a penalty kick, and finishing the season ranked #7 in the South Region by the NSCAA. Hampden-Sydney proved that it is on the right track and has ratcheted up plenty of momentum for next season.

Sophomore Michael Carter (above) earned 2007 ODAC all-tournament honors for his strong play over the two-game period. Freshman Matt Hampton was also named to the all-tournament squad for H-SC.

CARTER, HAMPTON GARNER ODAC ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS

SALEM, VA - Hampden-Sydney sophomore defender Michael Carter (Fredericksburg, VA/Massaponax) and freshman midfielder Matt Hampton (Virginia Beach, VA/Kellam) have been named to the 2007 ODAC all-tournament team after their stellar performances in the event. The Tigers, seeded second in the tournament, reached the tournament semifinals before bowing out in a tough 2-1 loss to No. 3 seed Washington and Lee.

H-SC head soccer coach Josh Laux led the Tigers to a 10-2-3 record in the team's final 15 matches, including a No. 7 ranking in the final NSCAA/adidas South Region Poll.

JOSH LAUX NAMED ODAC SOCCER COACH OF THE YEAR

SALEM, VA - In just his fourth season as Hampden-Sydney soccer coach, Josh Laux has earned the honor of Old Dominion Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for 2007. A 2001 graduate and four-year soccer standout at Randolph-Macon College, Laux has won 34 games in his young career at Hampden-Sydney and has quickly built the Hampden-Sydney soccer program into a serious title contender.

Junior Jason Butler was the lone Tiger named to the All-ODAC first team after scoring five goals and tallying seven assists for the season. Butler was one of six Tigers to claim all-conference recognition.

SALEM, VA - Hampden-Sydney's success on the pitch has apparently gained the respect of opposing ODAC coaches. The Tigers placed six players on the 2007 Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's soccer all-conference team after finishing the year with an 11-6-3 overall record and 6-1-2 conference mark, earning the team the No. 2 seed in the ODAC Tournament and No. 7 ranking in the final NSCAA/adidas South Region Poll.

CHONKO EARNS ESPN THE MAGAZINE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA - Hampden-Sydney sophomore defender Brett Chonko has been named to the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District second team for his success both on and off the pitch. Chonko played in 19 matches in 2007, starting in 11, and was an instrumental piece of a stingy Tigers' defense that allowed just seven goals in ODAC competition, third best in the conference.
