SOCCER TIGERS DOWN
LYNCHBURG 1-0 IN ODAC HOME OPENER
HSC-LC Box Score
HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (September 21, 2005) The Hampden-Sydney Tigers evened their
ODAC conference record at 1-1 (4-3-1 overall) as they defeated the visiting
Lynchburg Hornets by a score of 1-0 at Miller Field on the campus of
Hampden-Sydney College. The Hornets record falls to 1-1 in the ODAC and 4-2
overall.
Going into the contest the Lynchburg Hornets were ranked sixth according the
NCSAA/Adidas South Regional polls. An elated Tigers Head Coach said, “We were
thrilled to get a win against such a quality team like Lynchburg. We played
excellent in the first half and created many dangerous opportunities.”
The offensive hero for Hampden-Sydney was senior captain and forward Grant
Dickens (Raleigh, NC/Leesville Road). Dickens took a chest high pass from
fellow senior Robert Harem (Pelham,AL/Pelham), then played the ball to
the ground a snapped a one timer past Hornets goalkeeper Corey Zimmerman. The
goal came in the first half at the 23:29 mark. In the first half both teams
played evenly as total shots were at four a piece.
In the second half the tempo of the game changed dramatically. The Tigers
mustered only two shots as the Hornets played at a more frantic pace, reeling
off 11 shots in the second half.
Due to injuries to All-ODAC defender Chris Cadogan (Raleigh, NC/Leesville
Road) and defender Will Robbins (Ridgeland, MS/ Jackson Prep),
Hampden-Sydney was forced to play a total of eight freshman throughout the
course of the game. “In the second half they pressured us…We were forced to play
a lot of younger guys and they responded to the challenge and earned a
conference win for our program,” commented Coach Laux when referring to the play
of his freshman class.
The Hampden-Sydney Tigers play their next game on the road against Washington
and Lee at 11:00 am on Saturday September 24, 2005. The Tigers will return home
for more conference action against long time rival Randolph-Macon on Tuesday
September 27, 2005 at 4:00 pm.
