PLYLER HONORED AS ODAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK (September 24, 2007) SALEM, VA – Hampden-Sydney freshman goalkeeper John Robert Plyler (Charlotte, NC/Myers Park) has been named the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week following his stellar play in the Tigers' two victories on Sept. 19 and Sept. 22. Over the past week, Plyler went 2-0 and posted an impressive 0.50 goals-against-average. Plyler recorded one save en route to his first career shutout in the Tigers' 1-0 ODAC victory over rival Randolph-Macon on Wednesday. The win improved Plyler's record as a starter to 2-0, while also starting the Tigers on the right track in conference play. Plyler followed up his shutout with a solid six-save performance in Hampden-Sydney's 3-1 triumph over Piedmont College this past Saturday. The win was the Tigers' third straight and Plyler played a crucial role in holding the nation's leading goal scorer, Piedmont's Drew Griffin (17 goals in nine games), scoreless for 74 minutes of play. On the season, Plyler is 3-0 with a 0.86 goals-against-average and 14 saves. He will be back in the net tomorrow night, Tuesday, Sept. 25, as Hampden-Sydney seeks to remain unbeaten in ODAC play when they travel to Eastern Mennonite University for a 7 pm match.
