GENERALS TOP TENNIS TIGERS, 6-3 HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (March 21, 2008)–Tigers' No. 1 and No. 2 singles players Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) captured victories in their individual matches and together in doubles, but it was not enough as national No. 27 Washington and Lee escaped Hampden-Sydney with a 6-3 win yesterday afternoon. The loss hands Hampden-Sydney its first blemish on the season, as the Tigers drop to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the ODAC. Moss took the first set in his showdown with the Generals' top hitter Tim Ross, then erased a 0-5 deficit in the second set and rallied to take the set and the match, 6-1, 7-5. Pugh cruised to a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles over Washington and Lee's Nat Estes, giving Hampden-Sydney two wins over regionally ranked players. Moss and Pugh paired up to defeat Ross and Jamie McCardell 8-4 in doubles, accounting for the Tigers' three triumphs on the afternoon. The rest of the Tigers fought gallantly - freshman Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) dropped a tough 6-7, 3-6 decision to the Generals' Seth Feibelman at No. 3 singles - but the more experienced Generals went on to prevail. The Tigers return to action Monday, March 24 as they host Averett University at 3:30 pm.
