H-SC TENNIS KEEPS ROLLING WITH 8-1 VICTORY OVER GUILFORD GREENSBORO, NC (April 3, 2008)–Led by flawless performances by top-two hitters Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside), the Hampden-Sydney tennis team improved to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in ODAC play with a sound 8-1 triumph over host Guilford College. Moss and Pugh first earned an 8-5 doubles victory over the Quakers' duo of Jose Ortiz and Caleb Kimbrough before taking their respective singles battles in 6-0, 6-0 fashion over two tough opponents. Hampden-Sydney freshmen Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) rebounded from their doubles defeat with two singles victories. Pack, at No. 4 singles, dispatched of Guilford's Will Mason-Deese 6-2, 6-3 while Tigers' No. 3 hitter Harrell came back from a dropped second set to outlast Kimbrough in a super tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7, 10-7. The Tigers' Tal Covington (Gainesville, VA/Flint Hill School) and Andrew McLeod (Mandeville, Jamaica/Manchester) closed out Hampden-Sydney's singles sweep with super tiebreaker victories as well; Covington winning 6-0, 4-6, 12-10 and McLeod scoring a grueling 3-6, 7-5, 10-5 triumph. Hampden-Sydney's non-conference bout with North Carolina Wesleyan, scheduled for Thursday, April 3 has been cancelled due to inclement weather. However, the Tigers will return to ODAC action on Monday, April 7 when the team travels to Salem, VA to take on rival Roanoke College. The match is scheduled for 4 pm.
