H-SC TENNIS CLOSES ODAC SLATE WITH 9-0 WIN OVER MARLINS HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA (April 9, 2008)–Hampden-Sydney's tennis team concluded its 2008 conference schedule with a solid 9-0 victory over visiting Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon, securing the second seed and a home match in the upcoming Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Tigers jumped on the Marlins early, taking a 3-0 lead after the doubles round, then cruised to straight set victories in the top four singles matches to improve to 12-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play. Hampden-Sydney's top pair of Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) and Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside) dispatched of Virginia Wesleyan's Steven Wright and Devin Crosby 8-6 at No. 1 doubles before splitting up to claim singles decisions over their respective opponents, 6-1, 6-3 and 6-0, 6-1. Junior Jenks Snyder (Rock Hill, SC/Woodberry Forest) earned his second singles victory in as many days, defeating the Marlins' Jamie Griffen at No. 6 singles. Hampden-Sydney No. 5 Richie Holzapfel (Hagerstown, MD/St. Maria Goretti) needed a third set tiebreak to overcome VWC's Scott Montgomery, 3-6, 6-2, (10-6). Freshmen Shad Harrell (Richmond, VA/Mills Godwin) and Zack Pack (Keysville, VA/Randolph-Henry) dropped just two games combined in their singles victories. Hampden-Sydney will compete once more before partaking in the 2008 ODAC Men's Tennis Tournament on April 16-20. The Tigers will travel to Newport News, VA to square off with Christopher Newport University, ranked No. 5 in the Atlantic South Region, on Monday, April 14. Match time is scheduled for 3:30 pm.
