MOSS, PUGH SHOW WELL IN WILSON/ITA CHAMPIONSHIPS

ARLINGTON, VA (October 3, 2007)–Facing off against some of the top competition in the Atlantic South Region, Hampden-Sydney's tennis team produced a strong performace in the Wilson/ITA Southeast Regional Men's Tennis Championships hosted by the University of Mary Washington this past weekend. In the highly competitive singles Top Flight, two Tigers, sophomore William Moss and freshman Rich Pugh, advanced to finish in the top-16 of the 64-participant field.

Moss, who is the ITA's 12th-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region, won his first three matches before falling in the quarterfinals 6-3, 7-5 to eventual champion Randy Loden from Mary Washington. Moss defeated Tom Kinrade of Haverford College (6-2, 6-4), Tadd Hatcher of Washington and Lee (6-1, 6-3) and Bryce Parrish from Mary Washington (6-1, 6-1) on his way to an top-eight finish.

Teammate Pugh defeated King's College's David Portonova and Tim Mowrer from York College (6-3, 6-1) to advance to the Round of 16. In his next match, Pugh put up a valiant effort against the top player from Christopher Newport University, John Mook, but ultimately fell in three sets (7-6[5], 6-7[3], 6-3).

In the "B" Flight, Hampden-Sydney's Shad Harrell won two matches on his way to a Round of 16 appearance. Harrell upended Pavel Hejsek (Dickinson College) and Giorgio Athans (Salisbury University) before dropping a tough 6-4, 6-4 decision to Washington College's Todd Green.

The tennis team will return to the courts on Saturday, Oct. 6 when they participate in the Ferrum Invitational.
