H-SC TENNIS EARNS FIRST REGIONAL RANKING IN PROGRAM HISTORY

Team holds at No. 14 in ITA; Moss, Pugh ranked in both singles and doubles

SKILLMAN, NJ (April 16, 2008)–Heading into the 2008 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, the Hampden-Sydney tennis team has plenty to be proud of. After taking out three ranked opponents in their last eight matches and finishing the regular tennis season with a mark of 12-2, the Tiger tennis squad finds itself ranked No. 14 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Atlantic South Regional Rankings, the first ever regional ranking for a Hampden-Sydney tennis team.

Top hitter Will Moss (Fredericksburg, VA/Fredericksburg) remained the eighth-ranked singles player in the region, finishing the regular year with a 10-2 record, with his only losses coming to regionally ranked opponents. Joining Moss in the singles rankings for the first time in his short career is freshman Rich Pugh (Augusta, GA/Lakeside). The one-time ODAC Player of the Week jumped into the No. 19 slot after registering a 12-1 singles mark for the season.

As Hampden-Sydney's top doubles team, Moss and Pugh claimed the No. 7 ranking in the latest Atlantic South Region doubles poll. The duo recorded an unblemished record of 12-0 on the season, posting a 2-0 mark against regionally ranked pairs.

Regional No. 14 and second-seeded Hampden-Sydney (12-2 overall, 8-1 ODAC) will try and defend its home court in the first round of the ODAC Tournament this afternoon, Wednesday, April 16 when it hosts seventh-seeded Virginia Wesleyan College (3-11, 3-6) at 4 pm.
