FINANCIAL AID

Your first question may well be:
"How can we afford the benefit of a
private college?"
Let us tell you. For the 2007-2008 school year, Hampden-Sydney offered over $24 million in financial assistance in the form of scholarships, grants, loans and employment. Many families find a Hampden-Sydney education easily affordable -- despite what they thought!
A Hampden-Sydney education is definitely worth the investment: students
benefit from the intense interaction in small classes taught by professors
who want them to succeed; the safety and spaciousness of our 1200-acre campus
in rural Virginia; the emphasis on values -- honor, integrity, and commitment;
the spirit of community and brotherhood; alumni job-networking; and the
traditions of a college which for two centuries has educated men to be
leaders. Your degree from Hampden-Sydney
College will be worth every penny.
We have tried to make our explanation of the process of applying for
financial aid as clear as possible. Please keep in mind, however, that if
you have any questions, you are encouraged to contact us. We promise to try
and help you maintain your sanity (and, hopefully, a sense of humor as well)
throughout the college-search and financial aid process.
What is Financial Aid?
Financial Aid is monetary assistance, which a student may receive from a
number of sources (college, state or federal government, or other private
funds) to help him pay for his college education. It is usually given in a
combination of grants (which do not have to be repaid), loans (which do have
to be repaid), and work opportunities (the salary goes directly to the
student).
Hampden-Sydney College has a need-based program to help families who cannot
afford the total cost of the College, as well as a non-need-based program,
to supplement students with high academic ability. (We have two types of
non-need-based scholarships -- the Honors Scholarships and the Achievement
Awards.)
