C2C - College to Career Fair
by Andrew S. Sellers ’09

After sweating out the details on their resumes, pressing their suits, and getting up very early, 57 Hampden-Sydney men made a great impression on local and national employers at the inaugural “College 2 Career Fair.”  The fair was co-sponsored by the Greater Richmond Chamber of Commerce, Hampden-Sydney College, and eight other schools from the Richmond area.  Over 100 employers attended the event, ranging from local Richmond employers to employers with a global reach.  Rucker Snead, Director of the Career Development Office, said, “We have needed an event like the C2C Fair for years since so many of our students want to go back to the Richmond area after graduating from Hampden-Sydney.”

Students were able to meet with employers, to discuss potential job and internship opportunities, and to gain greater awareness of the scope of opportunities offered in Richmond.  Popular employers with Hampden-Sydney students included transportation and logistics companies, financial advising companies, and retailers.  Multiple students have secured interviews for internships, full-time, and summer jobs.

Freshman Basil Panton said, “Basically, I wanted to know what it feels like to speak to the recruiters on a one-on-one basis. I wanted to experience the feedback directly from the employers, and I wanted to learn about the different companies and what they had to offer.”

The career fair was complemented by a mid-day program on global business, featuring speakers from the University of Richmond Robins School of Business, Qimonda, McGuire Woods, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Phillip Morris USA.  The speakers stressed the importance of understanding the opportunities and obligations involved in globalization, but also that truly international work can be accomplished in Richmond, using the work of Qimonda as an example.  Hampden-Sydney College’s Career Development Office looks forward to planning another successful event for next year.
