21 Students and One Professor Inducted into Chi Beta Phi
by Hillman Terzian ‘08

On April 15, ten sophomores, six juniors, four seniors, and one Hampden-Sydney professor were inducted into Chi Beta Phi, the national scientific honor society.  These 22 individuals joined 25 other active members of the society, including the Hampden-Sydney’s chapter advisor, Dr. Herb Sipe.

Chi Beta Phi National Science Honorary was established in 1916 at Randolph-Macon College to honor undergraduates who excel in science and to provide them with a forum for scientific discussion.  The Gamma Chapter of Chi Beta Phi is the organization’s second-oldest surviving chapter and has been active at Hampden-Sydney since 1921.

Following the induction ceremony, Dr. Anne Lund, Professor of Biology and one of the inductees, was given a special commendation for her years of service to Hampden-Sydney in honor of her retirement at the end of this academic year.  She is seen accepting the citation with the Gamma Chapter’s officers: President Hillman Terzian ’08, Vice President Matt Newton ’08, and Secretary-Treasurer Mike Antolini ’08.  Dr. Lund offered some words of wisdom to the members of Chi Beta Phi and reflected on some of her fondest memories while teaching at the College.  In particular, she fondly remembered her dear friend Professor Lee Cohen, long-time Adjunct Associate Professor of Mathematics.  She also remembered the excitement she felt while teaching college-level biology during an era of incredible discovery in the field of immunology.

Chapter elections followed; Ben Brown ’10 was elected President, Bryan Greenfield ’09 was elected Vice President, and Topher Arnatt ’09 was elected Secretary-Treasurer.  A group photograph was taken in front of Gilmer Hall, and the event concluded with pizza.
