The Hampden-Sydney Student
Leadership Program

THE PURPOSE
The program, through specially designed classes, events, and experiences, seeks to:

  • empower students with information, insights, and self-knowledge to motivate and enable them to make wise choices;
  • have students act with honesty and integrity and on principle;
  • help students to live lives exhibiting positive attitudes, behavior, and sound values;
  • empower students to be good citizens;
  • encourage students to be people worthy of emulation - leaders by example as well as by action;
  • equip students with skills and abilities effectively to assume and carry out current and future leadership responsibilities;
  • influence for the better those around them;
  • contribute to the commonweal throughout their lives.


THE PARTICIPANTS
Participants will be chosen from a wide cross-section of the student body, both elected leaders and students from the general student body who want to learn more about leadership. Everyone has to apply to be considered. Up to forty positions will be available.


PROGRAM CONTENT
There will be a topical focus for each session. Each meeting may involve specific readings, interactive simulations and discussions, videos, films, outside speakers and facilitators, self-assessment inventories, and experiential learning activities. Each participant will be provided a notebook of readings and resource materials.


EXPECTATIONS
Each participant will be expected to take this program seriously, to prepare in advance, and to participate in each session. Attendance at all sessions is expected, and there shall be no excused absences. Any participant missing more than two sessions for any reason(s) shall not be eligible for a certificate of completion.
