Planned Giving
|
| Art Matney ’63 and his wife Lynda chose to help the College with a planned gift which brought them income, saved money on their taxes, and will benefit Hanpden-Sydney College forever. |
Lynda and Art Matney ’63 wanted to make a gift to Hampden-Sydney’s Through These Gates campaign. After exploring several options, they decided on a charitable remainder trust, a gift that provides income to them for their lifetimes, while the remainder will be used by the College as they have designated.
The Matneys made their gift with highly appreciated stock, on which they would have had to pay significant capital gains taxes if they had sold the stock and used the cash for income. By transferring the stock to the College and setting up a trust, they alleviated much of the capital gains tax. Art and Lynda have asked that the residue go into an endowment fund for the maintenance of the new Lewis C. Everett Stadium, where it will honor Art’s classmate and provide funds in the future to keep the stadium in good condition for generations of students and alumni to enjoy.
