PUBLIC SERVICE CERTIFICATE AWARD RECIPIENTS - 2007 |
The annual Wilson Center Awards dinner was held on April 20, 2007. It was, as usual, a high point of the year for the Wilson Center, a time
to recognize and honor the distinguished public service careers of two alumni,
one friend of the Center, and to award certificates of competion to the
seniors in both the Public Service and the
Military Leadership/National Securities Studies Certificate Programs.
The 2007 Public Service Program Certificate Recipients are pictured below, flanked by H-SC
President Walter M. Bortz III and Wilson Center Director Dr. David E. Marion.

Left to right:Benjamin C. "Cabell" Barrow, a Political Science major (cum laude), who interned in the Fulbright Office located in Prague, Czech
Republic. His research paper was entitled, "The Velvet Revolution." He plans to work in a Raleigh law
firm for a year, then go to law school.
Jason R. Bart, a Classical Studies and Philosophy major (summa cum laude, Senior Fellow, Cross Disciplinary Honors in
Classics and Philosophy), interned in the Office of the Executive Director of the Lancaster County,
PA Redevelopment Authority. He is planning to devote the next two years as Peace Corps volunteer in Central Asia. |

Left to right:Alex C. Crouch, a Political Science and History major, did an internship at the lobbying firm of Valente and Associates, Washington,
D.C. His research paper was entitled, "Public Policy Issues in the Contemporary Congressional Immigration Debate."
Thomas P. "Tom" Doheny, a Political Science major, interned in the Press Office of the Vice President in the White House,
Washington, D.C. His research was on the Changing Role of Modern Vice Presidents.

William L. "Lance" Marston, a Political Science major (magna cum laude, Honors in Political Science), was an intern for Mr. Dave Brooks, Deputy Finance Director in the Richmond
office of the Harris Miller for Senate 2006 Campaign. Lance researched "The Minimum Wage Debate in America." After college he will
be managing a campaign for a Virginia General Assembly candidate.
Garth O. Patterson, an Economics and Political Science major (Second Honor, Senior Fellow, summa cum laude, Cross Disciplinary
honors in Economics and Political Science), interned in the Fulbright Office in Prague, Czech Republic. His
Senior Fellowship Presentation was entitled, "Under the Lion's Paw: British Imperial Policy and the Political and Economic Development of
British India 1757-1948." He plans enroll in a graduate public policy program.

Nathan H. "Nate" Schnetzler a Political Science and English major, interned in the National Offices of Trout Unlimited, in
Arlington, VA. His research project was on "Interest Groups in American Politics: A Case Study of Trout Unlimited." His Departmental
Honors Presentation was entitled, "Where the Wild Things Are: Roadless Area Policy and the Battle between Conservation and Commerce off
the Beaten Patch." Nate will be attending law school at the University of Richmond.
Zachary J. "Zack" Streeter, a history major, was a summer intern at Crosslink Strategy Group, located in Washington, D.C. He also
completed a sophomore internship with the Student Conservation Association at the Colonial National Park in Yorktown. His research paper
was entitled, "Governmental Regulation of the Economy: A Study of Wal-Mart." |

Sterling L. Whitehead (shown above), an
Economics major (cum laude), interned at the
National Taxpayer's Union in Washington,
D.C., and Sen. John Warner's Washington
office. His research paper was
entitled,
"Reforming the United Nations into a World Federal Liberal Democracy." He plans to take a
business position
in Texas.

Michael H. Doyle, a Mathematical Economics major, interned with the VA Port Authority in Norfolk, VA.
Zach. H. "Hampton" Howerton IV, a Political Science and Economics major, interned in the office of the District Attorney in
Greensboro, NC, and had an additional summer internship in 2005 with Congressman Howard Coble (R-NC, 6th District), Washington, D.C.
Zach plans to take a year off before going to law school.
